JAMMU / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Heavy rains have caused significant disruptions along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, leading to its closure due to landslides and shooting stones in the Ramban district. The continuous downpour has made it necessary for the authorities to halt all vehicular movement to ensure public safety. While the Mughal and Sinthan roads remain operational, travelers are urged to exercise caution and adhere to lane discipline to prevent congestion.
The impact of the heavy rains is not limited to the highway. In the Udhampur district, landslides near the Sharda Mata temple have further complicated the situation. Efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore traffic flow, with men and machinery working tirelessly to remove blockades. The authorities have advised the public to avoid travel until conditions improve and the roads are deemed safe.
In addition to the highway disruptions, a large-scale search and rescue operation is ongoing in the Kishtwar district, following a devastating cloudburst in the village of Chisoti. The incident, which occurred on August 14, resulted in the tragic loss of 61 lives, including security personnel, and left over 100 individuals injured. Rescue teams, equipped with machinery and sniffer dogs, continue to search for approximately 50 missing persons amid challenging weather conditions.
The cloudburst has caused extensive damage, flattening a makeshift market and a langar site for the annual Machail Mata yatra, which has been suspended for several days. The destruction extends to residential and government buildings, temples, water mills, and infrastructure such as a 30-meter-long bridge. In response, the army has constructed a Bailey bridge to restore connectivity to the affected areas, while all-terrain vehicles have been deployed to support the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
